Rugby League – Watkins set for early Rhinos exit

Leeds Rhinos captain Kallum Watkins will leave the club at the end of the 2019 Super League season after agreeing to prematurely cancel his contract. The 28-year-old has scored 101 tries in 256 appearances for the Rhinos since making his debut as a 17-year-old in 2008 and he had no plans to depart Headingley having penned a new four-year deal in 2018. However, director of rugby Kevin Sinfield has revealed that finances have dictated that the club will have to get Watkins off the books ahead of the 2020 campaign and the player has agreed to depart to find a "new challenge". Sinfield said: "Kallum is aware of our plans for the squad moving forward and the restrictions that the salary cap has on our ability to develop this group of players." Leeds are currently struggling down in 10th place in Super League, while leaders St Helens are 11/10 with Bet365 to win the Grand Final.
