England Women 0-1 New Zealand Women: Lionesses lose final World Cup warm-up

Sarah Gregorius of New Zealand scores against England

England's final warm-up game before the Women's World Cup saw them suffer a surprise defeat as they were beaten by a resilient New Zealand at Brighton's Amex Stadium.

The visitors took the lead shortly after half-time from only their second attack, as Sarah Gregorius poked home on the rebound after Carly Telford spilled Rosie White's shot, amid some slack England defending.

The home side created the vast majority of the chances, dominating the possession and territory, but were unable to find a way through in front of a crowd of 20,076.

The defeat was England's second of four games in their 'Road to France' series, following April's 1-0 loss to Canada and well-deserved victories over Spain and Denmark.

The Lionesses get their World Cup campaign under way against Scotland in Nice on Sunday, 9 June after hosts France open the tournament against South Korea on Friday.

England, who are among the pre-tournament favourites to win the world title this summer, will then face Argentina on 14 June and 2011 champions Japan on 19 June, with Phil Neville's side bidding to improve on 2015's third-place finish.
