Darts – MVG looking for better

Michael van Gerwen concedes he needs to play better in the next round of the World Matchplay, having defeated Australian debutant Damon Heta 10-7. The double Matchplay champion has set up a tie against Ian White in round two on Wednesday and can be backed at 1/4 with bet365 to advance through to the quarter-finals, with White available at 3/1 to cause something of a surprise. It has been a barren year thus far for the legendary Dutchman, who has failed to win a single ranking title since the Players Championship Finals last November. Van Gerwen averaged just over 95 against Heta - a dip from his usually exceptional standards - but he did enough to secure a 10-7 victory. Speaking afterwards, the world number three admitted he needs to improve if he is to win his first Matchplay crown since 2016 but says, for now, results are all that matter. "I had to work hard today, but I got the job done," said Van Gerwen. "It was hard work and there's more in the tank, but I've got the first round out of the way. "I didn't play my absolute A-game, but hopefully that can come later in the tournament. I feel it's coming, but I just have to keep winning games."
