A former Newcastle Knights player suing the club over alleged repeated concussions suffered during his playing days causing permanent brain damage has had a preliminary court win in his fight for compensation.

A New South Wales supreme court judge on Monday agreed to a request from James McManus’s legal team for access to a wide variety of documents involving other former NRL players who had suffered concussion and head injuries.

Canberra flexed their premiership muscle and jumped to third place on the NRL ladder with a 54-4 flogging of South Sydney at ANZ Stadium. The game was pretty much over by half-time after Jordan Rapana and Joey Leilua went on a rampage down the right side to make it 26-0. Rapana had a hand in four of the Raiders’ five first-half tries, offloading for Elliott Whitehead’s opener, scooting out of dummy-half for the next and diving on a Leilua grubber on the stroke of halftime for his second.

A spectacular try from Knights fill-in fullback Jake Mamo three minutes from full-time set the game up for a grandstand finish. Mamo leapt over Storm fullback Cameron Munster to snatch a Jarrod Mullen kick out of the air, scoring his second try of the day next to the posts to put the Knights within striking distance.
