Bobby Wood rescues point and World Cup qualifying hopes for USA

It was a game the United States did not need to win but one they dared not lose. And Bobby Wood rescued a point – and with it his country’s World Cup qualifying hopes – with a dramatic late equalizer against Honduras on Tuesday.

Wood, a second-half substitute, pounced on a loose ball in the 85th minute, after Kellyn Acosta’s powerful free-kick caused havoc in the Honduras penalty area, to spare USA blushes.

Hello and welcome to Olímpico Metropolitano in San Pedro Sula for tonight’s World Cup qualifier between Honduras and the United States. It’s a 92F night (with 70% humidity!) at a sold-out stadium of 35,000 for a crucial match for both sides’ qualifying hopes.

The US enter tonight’s match in third place with eight points, level with Honduras but a comfortable eight goals ahead on goal difference and one point above fifth-place Panama. Above them are Mexico (17 points) and Costa Rica (14), with a top-three finish necessary for automatic qualification and the fourth-place team forced into a two-leg play-off with the fifth-place team from Asian and Australian confederation.

Autopsy results show that former Glasgow Rangers footballer Arnold Peralta suffered 18 gunshot wounds in what prosecutors described as a “vicious attack”.

The 26-year-old midfielder was killed on Thursday when two men on a motorcycle opened fire at a shopping mall in Honduras in his hometown of La Ceiba, on the Caribbean coast.
