Forget Carlton Cole: the strikers Crystal Palace could target to fill Benteke gap

The Belgian’s injury has left Roy Hodgson’s side without a recognised fit striker in their first-team squad. From Rickie Lambert to Michel Platini, what are options available on the dwindling free agents’ list?

Crystal Palace’s search for a striker to fill the Christian Benteke-shaped hole created by the Belgium international’s untimely knee injury has reportedly led Roy Hodgson to “step up his attempts to land free-agent Carlton Cole”, according to reports on Thursday.

Like Hodgson, the 33-year-old former Chelsea and West Ham frontman hails from Croydon and has been without a club since being released by Indonesian side Persib Bandung last month. The only issue might be that Cole not only failed to score a single goal in 268 minutes of action and his influence was dismissed by the club’s manager as “like playing with 10 men”.

Crystal Palace’s Christian Benteke set to miss six weeks with knee injury

• Belgium striker sustained minor ligament damage on Saturday
• Palace face striker shortage after failing to sign back-up option

Crystal Palace’s hopes of recovering from their abysmal start to the Premier League season have been dealt a blow with news that their record signing, Christian Benteke, is expected to miss around six weeks with the knee injury he sustained in the loss at Manchester City on Saturday.

The Belgium forward limped out of the 5-0 loss at the Etihad Stadium after 72 minutes, with Roy Hodgson confirming afterwards that he will miss the trip to Old Trafford this weekend. Benteke was sent on Monday to see a specialist, who has confirmed that the player purchased last year from Liverpool for an initial £26m has sustained minor ligament damage and is likely to be out for more than a month.

Crystal Palace turn to Benteke Jr after Loïc Rémy injury

• Jonathan Benteke will be in squad for Saturday’s trip to Middlesbrough
• Yohan Cabaye misses trip to Teesside with a groin injury

Crystal Palace are to include Christian Benteke’s younger brother, Jonathan, in their squad for Saturday’s trip to Middlesbrough, with the forward having moved up the pecking order at Selhurst Park after Loïc Rémy succumbed to injury.

While Palace paid a club record £27m to secure Christian Benteke from Liverpool this summer, his 21-year-old sibling joined for a nominal fee from the Belgian club Zulte Waregem, for whom he had scored twice in 21 league matches. The presumption was he would link up with the development squad and continue his progress in youth football, but the torn thigh that has ruled Rémy out for up to two months has left Alan Pardew short in attacking options.

Christian Benteke to have Crystal Palace medical ahead of £27m move

• Fee agreed for Liverpool striker after weeks of negotiations
• Palace still interested in Chelsea forward Loïc Rémy

Christian Benteke will undergo a medical at Crystal Palace on Friday with Alan Pardew having praised the board for the “brave” decision to sanction the club record £27m signing of the Belgium international.

The 25-year-old striker will depart Liverpool after only 12 months at Anfield, following a £32.5m switch from Aston Villa last summer, with his arrival in south London serving to appease supporters disillusioned by the exits of Yannick Bolasie and Mile Jedinak this week. Pardew, whose side lost their opening game of the season 1-0 at home to West Bromwich Albion last weekend, was conscious of the need to lift the mood after the sale of that pair to Everton and Villa respectively.

Crystal Palace to target Moussa Sissoko with money from Yannick Bolasie sale

• Alan Pardew keen on reuniting with Newcastle midfielder
• Liverpool’s Christian Benteke still on manager’s radar

Alan Pardew hopes Crystal Palace will use the money raised through Yannick Bolasie’s £25m sale to Everton to reunite him with Moussa Sissoko, who is keen to leave Newcastle United before the end of the transfer window.

Bolasie, who came off the bench in Palace’s opening-day defeat by West Bromwich Albion, signed a five-year contract at Goodison Park on Monday having passed a medical over the weekend. The deal for the 27-year-old could potentially rise as high as £30m with Bristol City, who had inserted a sell-on clause into the winger’s £350,000 switch to Selhurst Park four years ago, due a sizeable tranche of the fee.

Christian Benteke admits he may have to consider his Liverpool future if it becomes apparent the striker does not feature in Jürgen Klopp’s plans.

Christian Benteke seeks Liverpool talks after tough season on the fringe

• Striker to have meeting with Jürgen Klopp over Anfield future
• Benteke: ‘It has not been easy but I keep going and never doubt myself’

Christian Benteke will hold talks with Jürgen Klopp to establish whether the striker has a future at Liverpool. Benteke has endured a difficult first season and appears certain to be part of a summer cull but insists he may stay.

Benteke was signed from Aston Villa for £32.5m last July, when Brendan Rodgers was in charge at Liverpool, and has become an increasingly marginal figure. Under Klopp he has started only 14 matches and was regularly left out of the starting lineup for crucial fixtures, including the Europa League final defeat by Sevilla, when he came on in the 83rd minute after Divock Origi had been sent on in a search for goals.

Christian Benteke questions why Jürgen Klopp ‘ignores’ him at Liverpool

• Striker unhappy with how little he has been deployed by Liverpool manager
• Claims he can be success at club as they do not ‘play in Barcelona style’

Christian Benteke appears to have accelerated his likely departure from Liverpool this summer by questioning why Jürgen Klopp “ignores” him.

The Belgium forward has scored just eight goals in 35 appearances since joining Liverpool from Aston Villa for £32.5m in July and has rarely featured under Klopp, who replaced Brendan Rodgers as manager in October. Benteke has made just five starts in 16 matches since the end of December and scored just two goals in that time, with one of them being a penalty.

Controversy not video cameras gives football its engrossing vitality | Michael Butler

Christian Benteke’s last-minute penalty for Liverpool at Crystal Palace had everyone disagreeing but that is part of the game’s enduring magic

It does not matter how many times you watch Damien Delaney’s tackle on Christian Benteke during Liverpool’s controversial win at Crystal Palace on Sunday, there is no definitive answer to whether it should have been awarded as a penalty. Jamie Carragher argued it was, “100%”. Alan Pardew unsurprisingly said the referee, Andre Marriner, was wrong. After viewing the incident via numerous replays, two former Premier League referees, Mark Halsey and Graham Poll, held opposing views of the incident in their newspaper columns.

It goes to show there will always be incidents that are far from clear-cut. The Benteke penalty on Sunday was particularly timely in this regard, coming the day after the International FA Board announced plans for a two-year trial of video technology to help referees, to start no later than the 2017-18 season. The provisional plan would, in effect, mean the referee would clarify an original decision via a headset with another official, hunched over a screen in a dark room. If there is still uncertainty, the referee will have a look on a tablet device on the side of the pitch.
