Youngs welcomes England competition

Ben Youngs will start against Samoa on Saturday.

Ben Youngs is delighted to be back in the England side but admits he has to fight to keep his place at scrum-half.

Youngs has been recalled in place of Danny Care for Saturday’s clash with Samoa.

The Leicester star is keen to impress as he accepts he will face serious competition from Care, Richard Wigglesworth and Lee Dickson for a starting spot.

Youngs, who will partner Bath’s George Ford on Saturday, told the BBC: “Players will always be picked on form and if you drop form, the position is very competitive.

“If you are not firing on all cylinders, one of the other nines will be. You have to focus on yourself and make sure you are firing all the time.

“To get the opportunity to start this weekend is a huge chance for me to put down a marker.”

Youngs was out of favour for this year’s Six Nations but he did start two Tests during the summer tour of New Zealand and featured as a replacement against the All Blacks and South Africa in England’s two previous autumn international fixtures.

England are seeking to get back to winning ways after five successive defeats and Stuart Lancaster’s side can be backed at 1.04 to beat Samoa on Saturday, or 2.00 to win with a -19 handicap.
