Yorkshire considering options

Yorkshire are considering using the loan market at the start of their County Championship title defence.

With several of the White Rose county’s players expected to be on England’s Test tour of the Caribbean when the Division One season gets under way for the champions at New Road, Worcester, on 7th April, in addition to captain Andrew Gale being suspended there is potential for players to be borrowed from elsewhere.

While Yorkshire hope to sign an overseas player – most likely the return of Australian Twenty20 captain Aaron Finch – they are also wary of throwing a handful of untested players into first-team cricket at one go.

And the change in personnel will also mean Yorkshire have to find different ways to manufacture wins.

“It’s going to be a lot tougher, especially at the start of the season with the West Indies trip, so we’re going to have to find a way to win in a different fashion,” said club captain Gale.

“We’re not going to blow teams away every week and win by an innings.

“I guess the positive about the early season is that we should have most of our bowling attack available. If you can bowl teams out and take 20 wickets, you’ve got a chance.”

Up to half a dozen of Adam Lyth, Alex Lees, Gary Ballance, Joe Root, Liam Plunkett, Jonny Bairstow and Adil Rashid are expected to be selected for the away series against West Indies which will leave Jason Gillespie’s squad under-manned for the opening six weeks of the domestic campaign.

Yorkshire areĀ 4.00 to retain their Division One title, with DurhamĀ 7.00 and Nottinghamshire 6.00.
