Yates keen to take 2015 chance

January 01, 2015 13:32:37 UK

Leeds Rhinos rookie Andy Yates says he is ready for a big year in Super League, after struggling to make an impact in his debut season with the club.

Yates made the switch to Headingley last year after starting his career with nearby Championship club Hunslet Hawks.

Injury problems, allied with intense competition for places, meant the young prop forward found it difficult to earn an opportunity.

I just needed to get a game under my belt. Now I can kick on and try and do as well as I can for Leeds.

But having played a key role in the Rhinos’ Boxing Day friendly win over Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, Yates says he is ready to fight for a place.

“I just needed to get a game under my belt. Now I can kick on and try and do as well as I can for Leeds. Training is completely different to playing. You need to train, but playing is a next step up,” said Yates.

“We will review the Boxing Day game and go on from there and try and improve my game and the team’s game. I am waiting in the wings, but you learn a lot from players like Jamie Peacock and Kylie Leuluai.

“They have helped me a lot in training and hopefully I can take that into matches and try and improve my game, do as well as I can and play as many games for Leeds as I can in 2015 and beyond that.”

The Rhinos won the Challenge Cup in 2014 but failed to make an impact in the Super League play-offs. They are 4.50 to retain the Challenge Cup and 5.50 to win the Grand Final in 2015.

They start the new campaign with a trip to face Hull KR on 7th February.
