Woakes enjoying boost of confidence

Seamer Chris Woakes says he is picking up confidence by being a regular in the England one-day set-up, as he aims to make a big impact in the coming weeks.

The Warwickshire man has taken 16 wickets in his last six one-day international outings and is enjoying the challenge of being handed the new ball at the start of the innings.

However, he is aware that competition for places has hotted up due to the returns after injury of Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad, as England prepare for their second game in a World Cup warm-up tri-series involving Australia and India.

Having taken 4-40 in the loss to the Baggy Greens on Friday, Woakes said ahead of a Tuesday showdown with India at the Gabba in Brisbane: “It was nice to get the nod for that first game and I was particularly pleased with how I bowled with the new ball.

“Sri Lanka was good for me and, with Jimmy and Broady not being around, it gave guys who have not played as much opportunity to stake a claim. I felt like I did that and I’m trying to continue it here.

“In the past I’ve been in and out and haven’t known if I was going to play or not, but it’s nice to know I’ve done it at international level now. It’s a confidence-booster.”

England can be backed at 11.00 to win the upcoming World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, with holders India 6.00 and West Indies 13.00.
