Whelan wants quick appointment

Malky Mackay has held talks with Wigan chairman Dave Whelan.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has confirmed that he would ideally like a new manager appointed before Saturday’s Championship visit of Middlesbrough.

The Latics chief finally lost patience with German coach Uwe Rosler last week after the side slipped to 22nd in the Championship table following a 3-1 defeat at fellow strugglers and local rivals Bolton on Friday, 7th November.

Graham Barrow was placed in caretaker charge at the DW Stadium and it looked like he would take the team into action against high-flying Boro when the league action resumes this weekend following the international break.

It’s an important job and I don’t like to mess around when I think I’ve got the right person.

However it seems that Whelan is moving fast to get a permanent successor at the helm for the game, while he confirmed that former Cardiff boss Malky Mackay has held talks despite the fact he is still subject to an FA investigation into alleged misconduct.

Former Boro boss Tony Mowbray has also been heavily linked along with Chris Hughton while Paul Jewell has been linked with a possible return to the club.

Whelan said: “I can confirm Malky Mackay has applied and we will speak to him. I believe he deserves a fair hearing.

“We’ve had over 20 applications and started interviews on Tuesday.

“Hopefully we can make an appointment before the game this weekend against Middlesbrough.

“It’s an important job and I don’t like to mess around when I think I’ve got the right person.”

Wigan can be backed at 2.60 to defeat Middlesbrough on Saturday regardless of who is in charge, while Aitor Karanka’s third-placed side are 2.62 to secure the three points and the draw is 3.30.
