Whelan expects Mackay to succeed

Chairman Dave Whelan is supremely confident that new manager Malky Mackay is the right man to help Wigan Athletic return to the Premier League.

The former Cardiff City and Watford boss has been appointed as the successor to Uwe Rosler, who was shown the door with the Latics down in the Championship relegation zone after a run of just one win in 12 games.

He is the man to lead us back into the Premier League, I am convinced of that.

And Whelan believes that he has got the right man for the job of turning the season around, with Mackay having led the Bluebirds to the Championship title in 2012/13.

The Latics supremo told his club’s official website: “He is the man to lead us back into the Premier League, I am convinced of that having met him and discussed the demands of the job ahead of him.

“He has led a team out of the Championship before and he knows this league inside out having played and managed in it.

“His achievements at Cardiff City were magnificent and we need a strong leader who will command the respect of a very experienced and talented dressing room – he is the man to do it.”

Mackay’s first game in charge of Wigan comes on Saturday when high-flying Middlesbrough are the visitors to the DW Stadium.

Boro are currently third in the Championship table, just a point behind leaders Derby County, having lost only once in their last 12 league games.

The Latics can be backed at 2.60 to win the game, with the draw 3.30, while Wigan are available at 9.00 to be relegated this season.
