West Virginia concludes non-conference schedule

The Mountaineers of West Virginia welcome in the Hokies of Virginia Tech in a classic trap game this Tuesday at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown.

Winners of four in a row and 11 of 12, 18th ranked West Virginia opens their Big 12 Conference schedule against No. 25 TCU in Fort Worth on Saturday with the Horned Frogs expected to be undefeated following their final non-conference game against Tennessee State on Monday.

With seven of the 10 members of the Big 12 currently ranked, the Hokies are unlikely to be a strong focus for the Mountaineers and therein lies the danger for Bob Huggins’ side.

Defeats to Appalachian State, Northern Iowa, Penn State and Radford add fuel to the fire that Virginia Tech is just not very good despite their 8-4 record and membership in the ACC.

A one-point loss to Providence away from a perfect start to the campaign, the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame quietly sit in 16th place in the Associated Press Top 25 poll.

With the focus, not unreasonably, on Duke, Louisville and Virginia within the ACC, the Irish have strung together a decent eight-game winning streak and close out their non-conference slate with the visit of Hartford to the Purcell Pavilion.

Notre Dame had little trouble with the Huskies of Northern Illinois last time out as they romped to a 91-66 victory three days before Christmas. Saturday the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech arrive in South Bend before the Irish have tough games against North Carolina and Virginia.

Meanwhile, Kentucky are 2.37 to win the NCAAB Championship, with Duke 8.00.
