West Ham United’s resurgent form this term has emboldened Sam Allardyce enough to target a prolonged challenge for the FA Cup with the team’s Premier League status having effectively been assured by the astute squad recruitment of last summer.

The team’s predicament a year ago, when they languished second bottom of the Premier League with a hefty injury list and a two-leg League Cup semi-final against Manchester City still to come, had prompted Allardyce to make nine changes, switch formation and hand three youngsters their senior debuts for West Ham’s FA Cup third-round tie at Nottingham Forest of the Championship last season.
