Wenger: Difficult to find a defender

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger appears keen to add a defender to his squad this month, but accepts that it is tough to try and find the right player in January.

Wenger has seen his defensive options hit for much of the season to date, with the likes of Laurent Koscielny, Nacho Monreal and Kieran Gibbs all suffering with injuries, while summer signing Mathieu Debuchy is out for at least three months after dislocating his right shoulder.

It is not a supermarket where you go in and buy a defender.

However, while Wenger is well aware that his side will struggle if they suffer another injury or two, he is not prepared to do a deal unless it is absolutely right for the Gunners.

He told reporters ahead of a Sunday trip to take on Premier League champions Manchester City: “Why have we not signed a defender? We haven’t found one. We are not the only ones working on the case.

“It is not a supermarket where you go in and buy a defender. It is a market that is very restricted. The players who can strengthen the best ten teams in Europe, you don’t find many and it is the same for everybody.

“We are a big attraction, of course we are. If it was easy we would do it.

“We have made enquiries, but then you have the second handicap – who wants to sell their best player, especially a central defender, in the middle of the season?”

Arsenal are currently in sixth place in the Premier League table and are 1.57 to finish in the top four, with Tottenham 6.50 and Liverpool 6.50.
