Webster aims for top form

May 27, 2014 10:12:02 UK

Castleford Tigers centre Jake Webster has challenged himself to raise his own level of performance as he chases a new contract with the club.

The Australian has struggled badly with knee injuries during the last two years, but says he is now ready to rediscover top form in a Tigers side that has enjoyed a fantastic first half to the Super League season.

“Even when I retire I don’t really see myself leaving in a rush. I’m contracted until the end of next year, and that means I need to pull my finger out and start performing at a higher level to see if I can stay longer,” said Webster, who has faced increased competition for selection following the signature of Michael Channing.

I’d had a rough few years but last year was probably my worst when I did my knee and had complication after complication.

“It’s been hard to get a spot, especially with Channing playing so well. I had to find a new role really in the back-row but now I’m back out in the centres and it’s not as stressful – there’s not as much pressure on you.”

Webster has also revealed that he considered retirement last year following numerous injury setbacks and surgical procedures.

“It was one thing after another with the knee,” Webster explained. “I’d had a rough few years but last year was probably my worst when I did my knee and had complication after complication, three or four surgeries, and I was close to hanging my boots up many a time.”

The Tigers continued their good form with victory over Widnes Vikings on Sunday. They could go level on points in second with victory over Hull KR this weekend.

Castleford areĀ 15.00 to win this year’s Challenge Cup outright andĀ 26.00 to win the Grand Final in October.
