Watson “wouldn’t say no” to Test captaincy

November 19, 2014 10:43:03 UK

Shane Watson would welcome the chance to be Australia’s Test captain.

Shane Watson says he’d be happy to captain Australia again – though he admits he’s not at the front of the queue.

The veteran all-rounder is hoping Brad Haddin will be passed fit to lead the side into the first Test against India in Brisbane, with Michael Clarke having been ruled out with a hamstring injury.

Haddin is still in doubt for the opening Test of the series, and if he cannot play then Watson would be in a group of contenders to take over the captaincy.

The time I’ve had the privilege of captaining Australia was certainly incredible to have that opportunity.

Having stepped down from the leadership group last year following the disappointing tour of India, where he led the side in the fourth Test in Delhi, he might not be the next in line.

But for now, he says he’s just concentrating on regaining his place in the Test side for Australia, who are 3.75 to win the 2015 World Cup, after missing the UAE tour with injury.

Watson said in Clarke’s absence, whoever would get an opportunity would have the skill set to try and make up for the void the skipper would leave in terms of a captain and a batsman.

The 33-year-old cited Steve Smith as a candidate if Haddin was deemed unfit for the start of the Test series, as well as Mitchell Johnson and himself.

“I wouldn’t say no, that’s for sure,” he added. “The time I’ve had the privilege of captaining Australia was certainly incredible to have that opportunity.

“It was an honour to be able to do it. But there’s a few people that are well in front of me to get the captaincy so my most important thing is to try and be part of that first Test team in Brisbane.

“I just need to be scoring runs over the next couple of weeks to give myself the best opportunity to be able to do that.”

Australia are 2.00 to win the 2015 Ashes series, with England 2.50 and the draw 6.00.
