Wanderers still looking for first win

Western Sydney Wanderers remain in search of a cutting edge after being held 0-0 at home by Central Coast Mariners.

Wanderers picked up their first point of the A-League season, at the fifth time of asking, but have only four goals to show for their efforts so far. Their record is now just nine goals in their last 12 matches in league and cup.

As a coach you are disappointed you’re not scoring, but you’re also pleased to see an improvement in the team.

Tony Popovic

Coach Tony Popovic shook things up for their first home game of the A-League campaign, making nine changes from the side that lost 2-1 to Perth Glory on Saturday.

It was a similar frustrating story, though, and the club remain bottom of the league. They had 15 shots to the Mariners’ seven at Pirtek Stadium, but failed to beat keeper Liam Reddy.

The visiting keeper denied Vitor Saba when he was presented with a one on one chance in a first half of few clear-cut opportunities.

After the break Central Coast, who are 2.25 to finish in the top six, had the best of the early chances, but after Ante Covic fumbled a cross he made amends to deny Matthew Sim.

Mark Bridge had an impact after coming on as a substitute, almost scoring with his first touch only for Reddy to come up with a save.

Tomi Juric came close to grabbing a last-minute winner, pushing his header just wide of the post.

Popovic felt on another day, his side could have won by three or four goals. He said: “You can’t ask for much more if you are creating those sort of opportunities. As a coach you are disappointed you’re not scoring, but you’re also pleased to see an improvement in the team.”

Mariners coach Phil Moss said: “We kept a clean sheet which was an objective of ours tonight, we created four great chances away from home and unfortunately it wouldn’t go in tonight.”

Western Sydney are 1.83 to win their next A-League match against Newcastle Jets, who are 4.50, with the draw 3.40.
