Wanderers’ goalless run goes on

January 02, 2015 10:00:01 UK

Western Sydney Wanderers remain without a win this season after being held 0-0 at home by Central Coast Mariners.

Exactly two months on from their Asian Champions League triumph, Tony Popovic’s side remain at the bottom of the A-League table. They have played 11 matches since becoming Australia’s first ACL winners in Riyadh, drawing four and losing seven.

Popovic may be Asian Coach of the Year, but he can’t buy a goal these days, much less a victory.

We just need the ball to somehow go in. I’m sure from there, as all good strikers will tell you, once that first one goes in they usually go on a roll.

Wanderers are 3.00 to win their next game against Melbourne Victory, who are 2.25, with the draw 3.50.

It is now seven hours without an A-League goal for Western Sydney, who have managed just six in their first 11 games and there were few positives for either side in a Pirtek Stadium clash played in high temperatures.

The closest Wanderers came to breaking the deadlock was when new signing Nick Kalmar latched onto Mariners keeper Liam Reddy’s ineffective punch from a corner. His overhead kick looked destined for the top corner, but Josh Rose was able to head the ball off the line.

Rose was involved in Central Coast’s best chance at the end of the first half. Wanderers keeper Ante Covic spilt a Matt Sim shot from just outside the box, before smothering a follow-up effort from Nick Fitzgerald and finally denying Rose with the second rebound.

The game had almost started with a goal, but when Nikita Rukavytsya latched onto Mark Bridge’s through ball he was unable to slide the ball past Reddy.

Bridge set up another chance nine minutes into the second half, his cross seeing Labinot Haliti head just wide of the far post.

Popovic admitted: “We just need the ball to somehow go in. I’m sure from there, as all good strikers will tell you, once that first one goes in they usually go on a roll and everything they touch goes in.”
