Waller expectant wth Moriarty

The all-conquering Chris Waller stable is bang on course for an eighth Group One for the season with Moriarty in the $1million Carlton Draught Railway Stakes on Saturday.

Those are the thoughts of the veteran gelding’s track rider Johanne Taylor, who arrived in Perth on Tuesday before riding Moriarty at his first Ascot track gallop on Wednesday.

We will just let him slot in behind and have a last crack at them.

Taylor was pleased with the way Moriarty worked, and believes the horse has what it takes to overcome a difficult draw after copping barrier 19.

“I was very pleased with his work,” Taylor said. “He had a bit of a look around because it was his first look at the track, but once he got down to business he worked nicely.

“He went a good three-quarter pace and then the last two furlongs he kind of lengthened out his stride and had a good blow.

“He did good work, but nothing over the top. The draw is not ideal, but he does go back so I don’t think it will be too much to his disadvantage.

“We will just let him slot in behind and have a last crack at them.”

Last season’s leading Group 1 trainer, Waller has made a scorching start to the 2014-15 campaign, claiming the Victoria Derby (Preferment), Coolmore Stud Stakes (Brazen Beau), Thousand Guineas (Amicus), Epsom Handicap (He’s Your Man), The Metropolitan (Junoob), George Main Stakes (Sacred Falls) and Underwood Stakes (Foreteller).

Moriarty is 21.00 to win the Railway Stakes at Ascot on Saturday, with The Cleaner 4.50 and Alma’s Fury 13.00.
