Waites keen to challenge for title

2013 champion Scott Waites is determined to make a major challenge for a second title at the BDO World Darts Championship at the Lakeside.

Yorkshireman Waites is seeded sixth for the action at the beginning of the New Year and is desperate to erase the memories of a title defence which lasted less than a day 12 months ago, when he was soundly beaten by eventual finalist Alan Norris.

Waites told BBC Sport: “I’m going to prepare well and hope I can get another win at the Lakeside.

“I take every game as it comes. I don’t mind who I play, I’ll just get up there and try to win every game that’s in front of me. If you do, you do. If you don’t, so be it.

“It’s all about consistency in darts. Hopefully I can improve my consistency and I think I’ll have a good chance at the Lakeside.”

Waites opens up against fellow Englishman Sam Hewson on Sunday and is 9.00 to be crowned world champion for a second time.

The field is headed by number one seed James Wilson, with Norris seeded second and three-time champion Martin Adams seeded third. Wilson is available at 7.00 to win the tournament for the first time, with Adams 8.50.

There is no defending champion present, with Stephen Bunting having switched to the PDC shortly after his triumph at the Lakeside.
