Vlaar desperate to aid Villa cause

Dutch central defender Ron Vlaar is desperate to overcome his latest injury setback as quickly as possible to help Aston Villa’s bid to secure their Premier League status.

The 29-year-old has not featured since New Year’s Day due to a knee problem sustained in the goalless draw at home to Crystal Palace and is eager return to the action to boost a Villa side without a win in their last seven Premier League games.

I’m just looking forward to playing again as soon as possible.

A clearly frustrated Vlaar told his club’s official website: “This latest injury is infuriating because I was feeling really good and looking forward to a lengthy run of games after overcoming a calf problem before Christmas.

“To be honest, I wasn’t too concerned at first, because I’d done something similar during the World Cup finals and again in our match against Newcastle United earlier in the season.

“But this time it just didn’t happen and I ended up needing surgery, which is why I’m currently confined to the sidelines – I’m just looking forward to playing again as soon as possible.”

Villa are currently three points clear of the drop zone, having scored a mere 11 goals in 22 league games so far this season and found the net only once in their current seven-game winless run.

The Midlanders take a break from league action this weekend when they host Championship leaders Bournemouth in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

The Villans can be backed at 8.00 to win 1-0 on Sunday and are 3.00 to keep a clean sheet, while they are available at 51.00 to lift the FA Cup this season.
