Vikings ready for Rhinos test

Widnes Vikings face arguably their biggest test of the season so far when they travel to Headingley to face Leeds Rhinos on Friday evening.

I cannot speak highly enough about this team. Every week our aim is to keep on improving.

Widnes captain Kevin Brown.

The Vikings have won all three of their matches so far this season, and were comfortable winners over big-spending Salford Red Devils last Thursday.

But captain Kevin Brown admits that the trip to face the in-form Rhinos this week will provide a real test of their ambitions.

“Leeds are a world class side. You look at their pack and there are no weak links and then you look at their backs and they’re all internationals. It’s crackers that a player like Ben Jones-Bishop can’t even get in their team, and it just shows the quality they have,” said Brown, who has also enjoyed spells in Super League with Wigan Warriors and Huddersfield Giants.

“Tom Briscoe and Kallum Watkins are pretty hot at the moment but you could go through the whole team and say that. But it could get pretty frightening if we look at them like that so we’ll try and go there and enjoy it without any pressure.”

Despite having a game in hand on many of their rivals, victory over Leeds could take Widnes joing top of the Super League table.

“You look at our team and it is not showing disrespect but we don’t have any superstars,” Brown added.

“But that is the good thing about rugby – if you’ve got a team that works hard it can go a long way.

“I cannot speak highly enough about this team. Every week our aim is to keep on improving.”

Widnes areĀ 7.00 to secure the win on Friday, while the Rhinos can be backed at 1.11.
