Victory prepare for confident Glory

Melbourne Victory will use the boost of their 1-0 win over Newcastle Jets to combat the confidence of Perth Glory when they face the A-League leaders on Friday.

It is the first meeting of the season between the two sides, with Victory having the chance to close the gap to just a single point if they win at Simonds Stadium.

The teams will meet again in their first fixture after the league resumes at the end of January, so the next three rounds will go some way towards establishing who are the A-League’s top dogs.

Perth areĀ 3.80 to beat the Victory, who are 1.90, with the draw 3.60.

Victory coach Kevin Muscat said he regarded the Glory as the best team in the A-League, adding: “They’ve built a little bit of momentum at the moment, they’re playing with a lot of confidence.

“They don’t give much away, they’ve got a threat in their attacking third and combining those two assets together makes you pretty dangerous.”

Muscat said he had noted that Perth had scored nine goals from set-pieces this season, including their equaliser against Melbourne City last Friday.

“It’d be remiss of me not to acknowledge that, it’s a strength of theirs,” he said. “We’ll look at that throughout the week and adjust things accordingly but I’m certainly not one to pick teams on set-pieces.”

Victory will go into the game without in-form attacker Fahid Ben Khalfallah, the Tunisian sitting out a one-game ban after picking up five yellow cards.

The club have to travel outside their Melbourne base for the Glory clash, as AAMI Park is unavailable due to preparations for the Asian Cup.
