Van Gaal wants Falcao to prove himself

Louis van Gaal has warned Radamel Falcao that he needs to prove himself and show that he is worthy of earning a permanent contract at Manchester United.

The Colombia international moved to Old Trafford on loan from Monaco on deadline day last September but has struggled to establish himself as a first-team regular at United and was left out of the squad for last weekend’s 1-0 home defeat to Southampton.

Falcao has started just seven Premier League games and scored three times for United so far, casting doubt on whether United will buy the striker for £43.5million at the end of the season.

If a player costs £95million or £5,000 it’s not any difference for me.

Van Gaal said: “He has to prove himself, that we have agreed.

“We have made this deal and everything is clear and it is not the end of the year so he has the chance for that. If a player costs £95million or £5,000 it’s not any difference for me.

“You have to prove yourself. A player of £95million has to prove himself also.”

Meanwhile, Robin van Persie looks set to miss Saturday’s trip to QPR with a “minor injury”.

Van Persie injured his ankle against Southampton and had to be substituted with Falcao a likely replacement for the 31-year-old Dutchman. Van Persie has scored eight goals for United this season.

United, 1.40 to finish in the top four of the Premier League table this season, are 1.40 to be the first team to score at Loftus Road against a QPR side that is available at 1.80 to be relegated. Falcao can be backed at 2.20 to score at any time against Harry Redknapp’s struggling team.
