Van Gaal waits on final Blind verdict

Manchester United head coach Louis van Gaal believes midfielder Daley Blind is facing a significant spell on the sidelines due to a knee ligament injury.

The 24-year-old recruit from Ajax was injured during the Netherlands’ recent 6-0 Euro 2016 qualifying win over Latvia and Van Gaal confirmed that the injury is a potentially serious one, the extent of which is still not fully known, although the problem is not as bad as was first feared.

It’s not as bad as the doctors thought after the match, but it shall be a long story.

He told the club’s official website ahead of the weekend clash with Arsenal: “Blind is not ready, he has a brace on his knee. He needs ten days’ rest.

“Then we’ll have another scan and say more about his injury. It’s not as bad as the doctors thought after the match, but it shall be a long story, I believe, but not six months or something.”

Blind, who can operate in midfield or defence had become a steadying influence for United following his arrival on transfer deadline day, helping the Red Devils improve their form in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, Van Gaal expects record signing Angel Di Maria to recover from a foot injury in time to face the Gunners and is confident that goalkeeper David de Gea will be able to feature after suffering a dislocated finger while on international duty with Spain.

However, left-back Luke Shaw is a doubt due to a groin strain picked up in England’s 3-1 friendly win in Scotland earlier this week.

Van Gaal added: “Di Maria has trained normally so I don’t think that is a question mark, but Shaw is. De Gea is good, no problem.

“I think I have to wait for the reactions tomorrow in training with Michael Carrick, but I also expect he’s ready to play.”

United can be backed at 3.20 to win at the Emirates Stadium at teatime on Saturday, with the draw 3.40 and a Gunners victory 2.20.
