US Open 2017: final round – live!

Spieth’s fast start notwithstanding, the conditions could cause quite a few players some fierce headaches today. At the end of a previously benign week, the wind has finally picked up. It’s currently blowing at around 20mph, the fescue dancing around joyously, like it’s just seen a hundred Paul Caseys heading in its direction. (Poor Paul Casey. The last man to win a major having triple bogeyed along the way was Keegan Bradley at the 2011 PGA; the last player to do it at the US Open was Tiger in 2000. Casey’s tripled twice already. His wait goes on.) Anyway, Erin Hills will be far better defended today as a result. If anyone shoots another 63, good luck to them.

Here we go, then: the final round of the 117th US Open! It’ll be a while before the leading groups go out, of course. First up, it’s the stragglers. And you’d have got good money at the start of the week on Jordan Spieth being one of those. But here he is, up with the lark today after uncharacteristically average rounds of 73, 71 and 76. The flat stick just hasn’t been working, which is really not like him. Plenty of putts shaving the hole, but none dropping, which suggests there isn’t too much to fix. Birkdale watch out! In the meantime, he starts out birdie-birdie today, up to +2 already! Where’s this Jordan Spieth been all week? But of course it’s too little, too late. His old pal Justin Thomas will have to provide the business-end drama today.
