Raheem Sterling scored a fine individual goal for the Reds.

Brendan Rodgers is confident that his Liverpool side can reach the Capital One Cup final after they produced a fine display in the semi-final first leg draw with Chelsea.

The Reds dominated the Anfield clash and, although they eventually had to settle for a 1-1 draw, Rodgers took plenty of positives from what was one of his team’s best performances of what has been a difficult campaign.

Liverpool fell behind in the 18th minute when Eden Hazard converted a penalty but they deserved their second-half equaliser which came courtesy of Raheem Sterling’s excellent individual effort.

It was a big performance from us. We’re starting to return to the level that we’ve been at.

Steven Gerrard hit the post while Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois made several excellent saves as Liverpool pressed for a winner on the night.

An ebullient Rodgers said after the encounter: “It was a big performance from us. We’re starting to return to the level that we’ve been at.

“It’s always difficult against them; they sit in a low block, the spaces are closed, and especially if you go 1-0 behind. They are an outstanding team and they know how to defend well.

“But I’m obviously extremely happy with the way our performance level is improving all the time. We can now go into the second leg knowing that the movement and speed could cause them a problem.”

Liverpool are 6.00 to win the Capital One Cup outright, while Chelsea are 1.72. Tottenham can be backed at 3.50 and Sheffield United are 34.00.
