Tough times for Sky Blues

Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold says bringing in new players during the January transfer window is not a complete answer to the club’s current woes.

The Sky Blues are 12 points off top spot and outside the top four after a run of poor results.

Their 3-0 loss to Adelaide United on Friday was their third straight home defeat – a sequence they have only once endured previously.

Sydney FC areĀ 3.00 to win their next match against Brisbane Roar, who areĀ 2.30, with the draw 3.40.

Arnold has seen four players ruled out for the rest of the season and urgently needs to bring in reinforcements next month, but he says it’s vital that the senior and younger players in the team all step up in the coming weeks to get the club’s season back on track.

Arnold said senior players such as Marc Janko, Shane Smeltz, Bernie Ibini and Alex Brosque had to set the example for the less experienced players who were filling in.

“Three of them are over 30, but we have to try to freshen them up as quickly as we can,” he said. “Plus we have some young boys on the bench and we have to try to move forward with them.

“You’ve got young Alex Gersbach who’s doing fantastic for a kid who’s only 17, but physically is trying to adjust to the league.

“And you’ve got Rhyan Grant who’s just back from an ACL, and has the engines up and down. But again, we just have to keep working hard and stay positive.”
