Spain striker Fernando Torres has agreed to return to his first club Atletico Madrid on loan until the end of the 2015-16 season from AC Milan.

Torres moved to Serie A on a two-year loan arrangement in August from Chelsea but it was announced at the end of last week that the Milanese giants will sign him on a permanent contract on 5th January.

The 30-year-old will now be reunited with coach Diego Simeone as El Atleti look to defend their La Liga title.

A statement on the official club website of the La Liga champions read: “Fernando Torres returns to Atletico de Madrid after an agreement was reached by our club and Milan as the international striker will play on loan for the remainder of this season and all of next season.

“Signing with our club is subject to the relevant medical examination that the player must undergo to join the team. The loan will be official on the 5th of January, day on which the winter market opens in Italy.”

The 2010 World Cup winner emerged from the youth ranks at Vicente Calderon to become one of the most sought-after forwards in European football.

He eventually left his homeland for Liverpool in 2007 and broke the 20-goal barrier in the Premier League in his first season.

He joined rivals Chelsea for a then British record transfer fee of £50million in January 2011 and helped win the Champions League, Europa League and FA Cup but never once reached double figures in the Premier League in four full seasons at Stamford Bridge and fell out of favour under Jose Mourinho.

Atletico Madrid and currently priced 26.00 in the La Liga outright winner betting and 21.00 to win this season’s Champions League.
