Tigers urge caution with Tuilagi

January 05, 2015 11:07:27 UK

Centre Manu Tuilagi is unlikely to be fit for the start of the Six Nations Championship next month and needs to be treated carefully according to his club Leicester Tigers.

The 23-year-old has been out since October due to a groin problem and Tigers director of rugby Richard Cockerill is wary about his player being rushed back too quickly, especially with the World Cup a matter of months away.

He is progressing really well and we want to get him right. He will be fit for the Six Nations at some point.

He said after seeing his team defeat Bath 17-8 in the Aviva Premiership at Welford Road: “It’s a day-by-day, week-by-week thing. Manu is so important to club and country.

“By the end of this month, Manu will be playing. He is progressing really well and we want to get him right. He will be fit for the Six Nations at some point.

“(However) the World Cup is huge and you don’t need your best players breaking down. Stuart (Lancaster) needs a fully-fit squad going into the World Cup, you don’t want to be risking guys.

“We’ll be patient and England have some good players as well, so they will probably miss him less than we do.”

England open their Six Nations campaign on 6th February against Wales in Cardiff, while the Red Rose open the World Cup on home soil against Fiji at Twickenham on 18th September.

Also in Pool A alongside the hosts and Fiji are Australia, Wales and Uruguay.

England can be backed at 4.50 to win the World Cup for the second time, with Australia 9.00 and current Six Nations champions Ireland 11.00.
