Terry tells ‘top players’ to step up

Chelsea captain John Terry has called on his side’s top players to step up as the Blues go in search of glory in four competitions in the second half of the season.

The Blues lead the Premier League by five points following a 5-0 weekend thrashing of Swansea City, while they are still involved in both the Champions League and the FA Cup.

At this stage, to still be involved in all competitions is where you want to be.

However, the immediate focus for the Blues is the first leg of a Capital One Cup semi-final against Liverpool at Anfield, with Terry well aware that his side will be tested to the full.

He said ahead of Tuesday evening’s showdown on Merseyside: “We’ve got top, top players, but as I’ve said before, until we go and win things it’s not there yet.

“That will be the test. We’ve shown during the first half of the season that we’re capable of pushing the top sides and that’s what we aim to do.

“There is a motivation in the dressing room to win the league and push on in the Capital One Cup, Champions League and FA Cup.

“At this stage, to still be involved in all competitions is where you want to be and it’s down to big players to step up.”

Chelsea will head to Anfield with the confidence of two victories at the home of the Reds in 2014, the first of which was a 2-0 success in late April which played a large part in Liverpool missing out on the league title.

In early November goals from Gary Cahill and Diego Costa gave the Londoners a 2-1 league victory on Merseyside and Chelsea are 9.00 to win by the same scoreline on Tuesday, while they are 2.75 to keep a clean sheet and 1.83 to go on and lift the Capital One Cup.
