Tennis – Nadal mentality the difference – Leconte

Former French Open finalist Henri Leconte has revealed just what it is that makes Rafael Nadal so tough to face on his beloved clay. Nadal won his first French Open when he defeated Mariano Puerta in 2005 and the brilliant Majorcan has since claimed 11 more titles in Paris, with 10/11 to add to his tally in 2020. He has only met with defeat twice in the French capital, against Swede Robin Soderling in 2009 and Novak Djokovic in 2015, a record that has led to him being nicknamed the 'King of Clay'. Leconte was beaten in straight sets by Mats Wilander in the 1988 French and he admits he would be no match for Nadal. Speaking to Stats Perform, Leconte said: "Mentally, he's out of this world. To play at his level, under these circumstances, physically and mentally, I couldn't even play one set like that."
