Swans stopper shows striker support

January 06, 2015 15:10:38 UK

Swansea striker Bafetimbi Gomis.

Swansea City keeper Lukasz Fabianski has backed Bafetimbi Gomis to impress in the absence of Wilfried Bony.

Bony is Swansea’s top scorer with nine Premier League goals but he has now joined up with the Ivory Coast squad for the African Cup of Nations and will be unavailable throughout January for the Premier League side.

Gomis has struggled for regular game time since his summer move as a free agent from Lyon and has just one Premier League goal to his name, although the Frenchman did grab a brace in the FA Cup win over Tranmere.

There has been tentative speculation Gomis could leave the Liberty Stadium in January, but Fabianski is confident the striker will make the most of Bony’s absence in the coming weeks.

“Bafe came on at Liverpool (in a 4-1 defeat) and looked dangerous, while he was very positive against QPR (on New Year’s Day),” the keeper told the club’s official website. “He has waited a long time for a run in the team but he will get it now and I’m sure he will deliver for us.

“We are also without Ki (Sung-Yueng, at the Asia Cup with South Korea) but we also have players in that position to come in and do a very good job.

“Wilfried and Ki have played very well for us this season but their absence means there are opportunities for the likes of Bafe to possibly have a run in the team and show why they deserve to stay in the starting XI.”

Swansea host West Ham in the Premier League on Saturday and they are 2.15 to take all three points.

West Ham are 3.30 to secure the win and a draw is available at 3.40.
