Surrey secure Sangakkara coup

Surrey have signed master batsman Kumar Sangakkara and expect to have Sri Lankan left-hander available for a large part of the 2015 domestic season.

The 37-year-old  has made more than 12,000 Test runs during his illustrious career, as well as over 13,000 runs in one-day internationals and Surrey director of cricket Alec Stewart is ecstatic with his new arrival.

He is a five-star player and five-star person.

He told the county’s official website: “We are delighted that Kumar has agreed to join us. He is the number one Test batsman in the world but it’s the special character that he has which is as important to us.

“He is a five-star player and five-star person and that is important because he will be working with our young homegrown players as they become serious cricketers at this level.

“He has worked a lot with our coach Graham Ford, when he was in charge of Sri Lanka, and we are both very happy to reach this stage.”

Sangakkara, who has previously played County cricket with Durham and Warwickshire, recently recorded an 11th Test double-century in the second Test match against New Zealand in Wellington, moving him to within one of the all-time record of Australia legend Sir Donald Bradman.

Surrey hope the addition of Sangakkara will help them improve on a disappointing fifth place in County Championship Division Two last summer.

The Oval can be backed at 5.00 to win the second division of the County Championship this summer, with Lancashire 4.00 and Essex 4.50.
