Stosur looking to make serve count in Brisbane

January 01, 2015 10:49:30 UK

Sam Stosur is looking to make a strong start to 2015 in Brisbane.

Sam Stosur is aiming to start 2015 in positive fashion at next week’s Brisbane International.

It is the first year the Australian will go into the tournament unseeded, but she fancies her chances of success.

Stosur, ranked 22nd in the world, feels fit and ready to go at the Queensland Tennis Centre, where she is looking for more consistency with her serves.

The tournament features a number of the world’s most powerful servers including Sabine Lisicki, who set the record last July with a 210km/h thunderbolt at Stanford.

I’ve been working on my serve a fair bit over the pre-season. I don’t have the biggest serve – but it’s certainly a weapon of mine and hopefully I can get it going.

American Madison Keys was clocked at 197km/h at Wimbledon, while others heading to Brisbane include Ana Ivanovic and Karolina Pliskova who were in the top 10 for most aces served last year.

Stosur, who is 51.00 to win the Australian Open, is no slouch, either, as she was in the top 10 and can serve at up to the mid-190s.

The 31-year-old said: “I’ve been working on my serve a fair bit over the pre-season. I don’t have the biggest serve – but it’s certainly a weapon of mine and hopefully I can get it going.

“If I can get (first serve percentage) to 60-70 per cent and mix in my kick serve I’m a chance.”

Though affected by injuries last season, with plantar fasciitis ending her year prematurely, Stosur beat former Wimbledon finalist Lisicki last year and also overcame top-10 player Dominika Cibulkova twice.

She said: “I still feel like I can absolutely do what I want to do out on court and compete with the best players. I am one of the older ones now, but I don’t feel like I’m slowing down.”

Sam Stosur is 81.00 to win the Wimbledon title in 2015.
