Sprinter Sacre confirmed for Ascot

Trainer Nicky Henderson is hoping for an improvement in going conditions after confirming Sprinter Sacre for the Clarence House Chase at Ascot on Saturday.

Henderson was concerned that heavy ground could prove too much for his nine-year-old, who is in need of a run, having not taken to the track for just over a year since pulling up in the Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton in December 2013.

It shouldn’t get any worse than it is today and it might improve, so I think we’ve got to go.

However, having walked the course on Thursday morning, a day after jockey Barry Geraghty, Henderson has confirmed that Sprinter Sacre will make his return, in what appears to be a high-class five-horse field.

Dodging Bullets, Twinlight, Somersby, Grey Gold are the rivals for the Henderson stable’s star performer, with the trainer confirming: “They had ten millimetres of rain overnight, but it’s not heavy ground and we’re going ahead.

“Barry was happy when he walked the course on Wednesday and I was probably seeing it at its worst this morning. It shouldn’t get any worse than it is today and it might improve, so I think we’ve got to go.

“We need to get a run into him and this is the obvious opportunity. We’ve pressed the green button, so let’s see what happens.”

Sprinter Sacre, who has won on 14 of his 17 outings to date, is 2.00 to win the Clarence House Chase, with Dodging Bullets 3.50 and Twinlight 6.00.

The going at Ascot is currently Soft, with some showers possible over the course of the next two days.
