Song focuses on Hammers form

January 07, 2015 07:12:26 UK

Loan midfielder Alex Song has set his sights on helping West Ham finish as high as possible in the Premier League this season after retiring from international football.

The 27-year-old, currently on a season-long loan from Barcelona, is eager to rebuild his career after a tricky spell at the Camp Nou and has opted to step away from duty with Cameroon, having been omitted from the squad for the upcoming African Cup of Nations.

I want to take time to focus purely on domestic football and start to rebuild my career at West Ham United.

Via a statement released to PA Sport, Song confirmed: “It is true that there were some discussions of late to include me in the squad for this tournament, but I feel after a lot of careful thought and numerous discussions with my family this is the right decision.

“My love for my country will never change, but I want to take time to focus purely on domestic football and start to rebuild my career at West Ham United.

“I wish Cameroon all the best and the team will always be in my heart.”

The Hammers are currently in seventh place in the Premier League, just four points outside the top four despite two losses and a draw in their last three league games.

On Tuesday they drew 1-1 at Everton in the third round of the FA Cup, setting up an Upton Park replay on Tuesday 13th January.

The Irons can be backed at 26.00 to lift the FA Cup this season, with Tottenham 17.00 and Song’s former club Arsenal 8.00.
