Soccer – Van Dijk targets major trophies

Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk has made clear his wish to 'challenge for major honours' by handing in a transfer request at Southampton. The 26-year-old Netherlands international is widely reported to be a target for a number of top Premier League clubs, but the Saints remain adamant that they are not willing to sell. However, Van Dijk, who is nearly fully recovered from an ankle injury which has seen him out of action since January, has now decided to take matters into his own hands to try and secure the move he desires. A statement from the player's management company read: "I am incredibly ambitious and want to achieve as much as I possibly can to fulfil my potential in what is a very short career as a professional footballer. "I want to play European football again and challenge for major honours and, as such, I would like Southampton to consider the interest in me from top clubs should it still exist." Southampton are 8/15 with bet365 to finish in the top half of the Premier League this season and are 9/2 to secure a top-six spot.
