Soccer – Mourinho wins Rooney backing

Manchester United's players have been urged by former star Wayne Rooney to "stand up" in a show of support for under-fire boss Jose Mourinho. The Red Devils have embarked on their worst start to a league campaign for 29 years and there had been speculation that Mourinho could be sacked ahead of last Saturday's game against Newcastle. United quickly denied those claims, while the players responded by battling back from two-down to claim a 3-2 win at Old Trafford. And the club's record goalscorer, Rooney, who left United in 2017 and is currently playing in the United States' MLS with DC United, has called on his former team-mates to improve further and help keep the heat off Mourinho. He said: "It [the form] is a bit of everything coming together but Jose is an easy target. Some of the players have to be better." United return after the two-week international break with a trip to face Mourinho's former club Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on 20th October and they are 4/1 with bet365 to win the game.
