Soccer – ‘Genius’ Ronaldo hailed by Santos

Portugal boss Fernando Santos watched Cristiano Ronaldo score a hat-trick as the side defeated Switzerland 3-1 to reach Sunday's Nations League Final and described him as a "genius". The 34-year-old Juventus star fired the hosts ahead in Porto on Wednesday with a superb free-kick after 25 minutes, before Switzerland equalised on 57 minutes when Ricardo Rodriguez converted a penalty awarded via Video Assistant Referee (VAR) after Nelson Semedo fouled Steven Zuber. The incident happened seconds before referee Felix Brych awarded Portugal a penalty for a foul on Bernardo Silva, but he brought the play back to give the Swiss the decision. Portugal, who are 5/6 with Bet365 to win the Nations League, recovered and Ronaldo's two-goal blast in the final two minutes of the game fired the side through to the final against the winner of Thursday's semi-final clash between England and the Netherlands in Guimaraes. "In terms of adjectives to describe Ronaldo's game - I have used many," Santos said at a post-match press conference. "I was his coach in 2003 and I could see where he would go. He is a genius. There is genius paintings and sculptures and he is a football genius."
