Soccer – City confirm Stones interest

Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola has confirmed that his club are trying to secure the services of Everton and England defender John Stones. The 22-year-old, who went unused by his country at the recent European Championships in France, is expected to cost the Citizens around £50million, with Guardiola keen to strengthen his defensive options in line with his approach of trying to build play from the back. "Everyone knows we are going to try, we will see what happens," Guardiola said after a high-profile friendly against Borussia Dortmund in China. Guardiola had hinted at a move for a ball-playing central defender earlier in the week, having also admitted that he was tempted to try Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho in a deeper role. The Citizens have already snapped up Spanish forward Nolito and German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan since Guardiola took charge at the Etihad Stadium earlier this summer. The men from Manchester are 5/2 with bet365 to win the Premier League next season, with Arsenal priced at 13/2 and Chelsea available at 11/2.
