Soccer – Barkley misses season’s start

Everton will be without England midfielder Ross Barkley for the opening games of the new Premier League season after he underwent an operation on a groin problem. The 23-year-old was unable to travel with the rest of his team-mates for pre-season games in Tanzania and the Netherlands and subsequent surgery is expected to keep him sidelined for around a month. A statement from the Goodison Park club confirmed: "Ross Barkley underwent surgery on his groin, with the injury having prevented him from travelling with the Everton team last week to Tanzania and this week to Holland. "The surgery has been a success and he is expected to be able to return to play in approximately four weeks." Meanwhile, Argentina centre-back Ramiro Funes Mori is set to miss a majority of the upcoming campaign after having had to undergo a second round of surgery on a knee injury, with Everton 11/4 with bet365 to finish in the top six in the Premier League.
