Soccer – Allardyce pleased with Defoe’s decision

Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce is thrilled that Jermain Defoe has signed a contract extension that will keep him at the Stadium of Light for three more seasons. The 33-year-old former West Ham United, Tottenham and Portsmouth striker played a key role in helping the Black Cats avoid relegation from the Premier League last term. Defoe moved to Wearside from Toronto FC in 2014 and has gone on to score 22 goals in 53 appearances for the club. Allardyce said: "Jermain is one of the greatest goal-scorers in the history of the Premier League and is a player that every manager would want to have in their team. "We are very pleased that we have been able to extend his stay with us." Sunderland are 7/2 with bet365 to be relegated from the Premier League in 2016/17, while Middlesbrough can be backed at 5/4.
