Shoulder injury makes Cilic major doubt

US Open champion Marin Cilic is a major doubt for the upcoming Australian Open as he is being troubled by a problem with his right shoulder.

The 26-year-old became the newest Grand Slam champion with a superb run at Flushing Meadows last year, but he may be unable to back that up in Melbourne, with the first major of 2015 less than two weeks away.

A clearly concerned Cilic said: “Since there is very little time for a full recovery and training, my appearance at the Australian Open is unfortunately under a big question mark.

“I have not cancelled my appearance in Melbourne. I will leave it for another seven to eight days to see how the situation will develop.”

Cilic’s best showing at the Australian Open came in 2010, when he reached the semi-finals before being beaten in four sets by Andy Murray.

Cilic can now be backed at 21.00 to win the Australian Open, with Murray 7.50 and Novak Djokovic 2.00.

Meanwhile, Djokovic has warned that there is an expanding group of players who can challenge for Grand Slam glory.

He added: “There is a new wave of players able to compete for the major titles. This time was coming sooner or later and we all knew that.

“I think a wider and larger group of players is able to get to the top. You have new faces coming up that can challenge who can win against the best players in the biggest tournaments, like Cilic, Wawrinka, Nishikori, Raonic and Dimitrov.”
