Shenton shrugs off Tigers departures

Castleford Tigers centre Michael Shenton has denied that the departure of key players will make it a struggle in 2015.

The Tigers enjoyed success in 2014 but have lost hooker Daryl Clark, half-back Marc Sneyd and forward Craig Huby from last season’s squad, however, Shenton believes that the players recruited will help the Tigers match last year’s achievements.

We’ve had to move on fast and we’ve got some new players in now to replace those guys.

“The squad is deeper. There’s a number of people for each position and competition for places is huge, which is a big part of why we did well last year. It kept everyone on their toes,” said Shenton, who is in his second spell with Castleford following two seasons with St Helens.

“You could say we will miss some of the players who have gone, like Daryl Clark and Craig Huby, but there’s no point worrying about it. We’ve had to move on fast and we’ve got some new players in now to replace those guys.”

Shenton believes that the removal of star names will help share the burden of responsibility around the squad and he even drew comparisons with the team’s evolution following the departure of Rangi Chase to Salford ahead of last season.

“The year we lost Rangi we spread the money saved across the team and that really helped us along with the game plan that we changed,” said Shenton. “It really worked in our favour that everyone was responsible for making sure we played well.”

Castleford open their 2015 Super League campaign with a home match against Wakefield Trinity Wildcats on 8th February and are 41.00 to win the Grand Final, while they can be backed at 41.00 to top the regular season standings.
