Sharapova sees room for improvement

May 27, 2014 08:51:25 UK

Maria Sharapova admits there is room for improvement in her game even after she cruised to a 6-1 6-2 victory against Ksenia Pervak at the French Open.

The Russian, who is the seventh seed at the tournament, made 17 unforced errors during the match, but remains on course to face Serena Williams in the quarter-finals.

Sharapova said after her victory: “Going into a first-round match at a Grand Slam, you want to be solid and do the things you need to do.

There are things I can improve on and do better for the next match, but it’s definitely nice to get through.

“It’s never easy, no matter how good you’re feeling or how bad you’re feeling. It’s just a different story once you get on the court. And I thought I did what I had to do very well. There are things I can improve on and do better for the next match, but it’s definitely nice to get through.”

Elsewhere, the number five seed Petra Kvitova battled past Zarina Diyas 7-5 6-2 and the number nine seed Dominika Cibulkova beat Virginie Razzano 7-5 6-0.

Flavia Pennetta was too good for Patricia Mayr-Achleitner, easing to a 6-2 6-2 victory while last year’s beaten Wimbledon finalist, Sabine Lisicki, saw off the French wildcard Fiona Ferro 6-1 7-5.

Former US Open champion Sam Stosur was far too good for Monica Puig, cruising to a 6-1 6-1 victory.

Serena Williams is available at 2.10 to win the French Open outright, while Sharapova can be backed at 7.00, Kvitova at 41.00 and Lisicki at 201.00.
