Selby hopes to emulate O’Sullivan

January 09, 2014 16:07:56 UK

Stephen Hendry has won a record six Masters titles.

World number one Mark Selby hopes to join Ronnie O’Sullivan as a four-time winner when he defends his Masters title at Alexandra Palace.

Selby won the title for the third time in 2013, following successes in 2008 and 2010, and he now stands just one success behind O’Sullivan, with Stephen Hendry the only man to have won the Masters on six occasions.

If you do win the title, you know you’ve really earned it because you’ve beaten the best.

And Selby is highly motivated by the chance to move alongside the outstanding O’Sullivan, telling the Leicester Mercury: “To defend the title and join Ronnie on four titles would be unbelievable.

“The Masters makes you feel special because it’s only the best 16 players, so you know that every match is going to be against another top player and you will have to be at your best to win.

“If you do win the title, you know you’ve really earned it because you’ve beaten the best.”

Selby opens his campaign against Mark Davis, with the world number one 1.25 to win that match and 6.50 to go on and clinch his fourth Masters crown.

O’Sullivan, meanwhile, opens up against Robert Milkins, who is making his debut in the tournament and The Rocket can be backed at 1.12 to progress to round two.
