Scripps National Spelling Bee 2017: championship finals – live!

An elimination on the first word of the championship finals gives way to a run of correct words. First it’s Alabama’s Erin Howard, who is tasked with spelling strisciando. She nails it. Next up is 13-year-old Mira Dedhia from Illinois, who correctly spells the word ascian. Then California’s Shrinidhi Gopal, who counts Ben Carson among his role models, survives purana, which is an ancient legendary tale of India.

The ESPN telecast is underway and we’re set to begin. First up is Rohan Sachdev. His word is panniculitis, which is an inflammation of the subcutaneous layer of fat. He’s using up a lot of clock here ... and, oh dear, he’s out! A rough start!
