Scottish FA close to naming new manager with Steve Clarke favourite

• Confirmation of new manager likely by Monday at the latest
• Aberdeen’s Derek McInnes still in frame for international post

The Scottish FA aim to be in a position to confirm the country’s new international manager by Monday at the latest with Steve Clarke now the leading candidate to succeed Alex McLeish. Derek McInnes, the Aberdeen manager, remains in the frame with the Scotland under-21 coach, Scot Gemmill, now believed to be the outsider of the three.

The association’s position is complicated Clarke’s Kilmarnock facing Aberdeen on Sunday in the final match of the Scottish Premiership season; both clubs are in pursuit of third place and a guaranteed Europa League berth. Clarke has also spoken of a dilemma over where he manages next season owing to his professional contentment at Kilmarnock but his family living in England.
